In 1991 a bartender in a Charlettesville, Virginia jazz venue decided to start a band. His name was Dave Mathews. Dave needed people to play with on a demo tape. He picked Leroi Moore and Carter Beauford two jazz players which agreed to help. Then the three asked Stefan Lessard, an upright bass player to join them (Stefan was only 16 at the time). The band got him to play the electric bass guitar. Finally they asked a string expert, Boyd Tinsley, and the band was born.
